Don't be alarmed if you spot an armoured fighting vehicle on your next trip to the supermarket - it's all in aid of this year's Poppy Appeal.

The centenary of the First World War is being commemorated this year, and the armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) will be making special appearances around Weymouth to raise money for the appeal and pay tribute to those who lived, fought and died during the war.

The 1966 Royal Artillery vehicle will be parked at Morrisons in Weymouth on the weekend of October 27 and 28, and at Sainsbury’s in Weymouth on the weekend of November 3 and 4.

It will head to the Nothe Fort on Armistice Day, November 11 as part of a static display.

Owner Colvyn Gillmon bought the AFV around ten years ago, and takes it on regular trips out.

He said: "I'm ex-forces myself, and I wanted to give something back. I bought the AFV as a hobby, but also as a way to raise funds for charity.

"Besides fundraising for the Royal British Legion through the poppy appeal, the AFV also takes part in events throughout the year in support of Help for Heroes and Combat Stress charities.

"AFVs like this one are used to carry troops onto the battlefield, and are still in use today - the army has great faith in them, so I feel lucky to own one.

Mr Gillmon says that owning the vehicle is "a full time job" that keeps him busy with parades and shows from April to September, as well as being out and about during the remembrance period.

He said: "Between events a lot of work goes into maintaining the AFV - it certainly keeps me out of trouble."

The Poppy Appeal is held every November to mark the period of remembrance. It is the Royal British Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign, and raises money to support currently serving men and women, as well as veterans, and their families.
