A MAN charged with fraud following the theft of a woman’s rucksack while she was swimming in the sea off Bournemouth beach has been jailed for six weeks.

Alan Stewart Hampton, 45, fraudulently used the victim’s bank card at two Tesco stores to pay for £70.05 worth of goods after the incident at 4.35pm on Sunday August 5.

Hampton, of Holdenhurst Road, Bournemouth, was identified from CCTV footage at one of the stores. He admitted an offence of fraud by false representation when he appeared before Poole magistrates’ court.

The court heard the woman left a rucksack under a towel and clothes near the pier but it was gone when she returned from her swim.

The defendant also admitted theft of a bag from a woman at West Undercliff Parade, three charges of theft from a motor vehicle, a further offence of fraud by false representation and two offences of criminal damage.

The offences were carried out in Bournemouth between May and August this year.

He was sentenced to six weeks in prison and ordered to pay a total of £590 in compensation.
