RUNNERS were roared along their way by big crowds for the Supersonic 10k this afternoon at the Bournemouth Marathon Festival.

The rain from earlier in the day had cleared, but it remained a chilly afternoon as entrants set about completing the course.

Runners set off from Pier Approach heading beyond Boscombe Pier towards Southbourne for 4km.

After turning back they headed west along the promenade, looping along Boscombe Pier, before doing the same at Bournemouth Pier.

A short run west to Durley Chine left runners with just the finish to complete, travelling back to Pier Approach.

A 30-strong group of runners wearing visors, who collectively formed Team Vicki, completed the race together on a special week for one of their squad.

Vicki Piper was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, but along with others from Kingston Lacy Lady Runners, she set a challenge of completing the Supersonic 10k.

Despite going through treatment she continued to train and meet up with the group on a weekly basis.

The race became a very special moment for Vicki and the team raised almost £7,000 for Dorset Cancer Care Foundation.

"This group have kept me going and kept me fit," she said.

"I kept running every Monday as much as I could through me treatment, even if I just met for a cup of coffee they kept me going.

"We set ourselves a target to do this 10k and they all decided to run with me.

"I got the all clear this week so I am a bit emotional. "It was amazing being out there taking part and the group are incredible."

While for many runners 10k over one weekend would be enough, 67-year-old William Bremner is also completing the half marathon at the festival on Sunday.

For the first part of his super weekend, William donned a shark hat and paced his way around the 10k course in aid of Asthma UK.

He is completing the half marathon in a Red Arrows pilot jump flying suit and raising money for the Jon Egging Trust.

"This is a brilliant event and it is great to have so many people cheering you along the way," William said.

"I have taken part in the festival a few times now and I love it."
