SIX open gardens to visit in Dorset and the New Forest this month...

1. Edmonsham House near Wimborne. Now open every Wednesday in October from 2pm to 5pm. Six acres of mature gardens with views, trees and shaped hedges and a Victorian walled garden. Adults: £2.50, children 50p. For more details, 01725 517207.

2. Kingston Lacy, Wimborne. Explore the Grade II listed garden, taking in seasonal highlights and its history, with one of the Kingston Lacy expert gardeners. 3. Knoll Gardens, Hampreston. Known for its grasses which will be looking their best in autumn. Owner Neil Lucas is also establishing a fine collection of woody plants. A great garden to visit to find ideas for your own. Visit knollgardens.co.uk

4. Frankham Farm, Sherborne. Opens October 14 from 11.30am

to 5pm. A 3.5 acre garden, created back in the 1960s by the late Jo Earle which features a wide variety of plants and areas. Adults £5 ( children free). Visit ngs.org.uk.

5. Lawsbrook, Shillingstone. Opens on November 4 from 10am to 4pm. Six acres of different tree species with a significant number of native species. Also flower and vegetable beds. Includes wildlife, stream and meadow. Adults £3, children free.

6. Exbury Gardens near Beaulieu. Exbury's beautiful woodland gardens cover 200 acres and is a jewel in the heart of the New Forest National Park. A must see at this time of year. Planted in 1919 by Lionel de Rothschild. Visit exbury.co.uk
