SOUTHAMPTON residents are calling for more CCTV cameras across the city after a knifeman carried out a carjacking in daylight.

Residents and shopkeepers said more CCTV cameras in busy roads and in shopping areas across Southampton would help make the community feel safe and prevent crimes.

This comes after a knifeman threatened a resident who was in a car parked up outside the Co-op in Worcester Place, Sholing on September 16.

As previously reported, Wayne Ray, 35, groundworker, from Southampton, was waiting for his partner in her car when a man opened the car door and threatened him with a nine inch knife before stealing the vehicle.

The incident, which happened shortly before 4pm, left Mr Ray and his partner Amy French in shock.

Ria Brisland, 41, from Sholing, works as a barber at the Cutting Edge Barber Shop in Worcester Place, only few metres away from where the incident happened.

She said the shop was closed on Sunday.

But added: “It makes you feel a bit worried if that person is still about. I’ve been working here six years and I haven’t known of anything like this. It would be great to have more security cameras around shopping areas. The council could put it up in the streets so the cameras could face the shops so that we are a bit safer.”

A spokeswoman for Southampton City Council said: “We urge anyone to report any concerns or incidents to the police who can manage these reports accordingly and most effectively.”

Following the armed robbery, Sholing residents are also asking for more patrols in the area.

Ronald Whitehead, 73, retired, lives near the Co-op in Worcester Place.

He said: “It’s shocking that happened in broad daylight. There should be more police and I don’t see them around now.”

A spokesperson for Hampshire police said officers continue to patrol Sholing to provide a visible presence in the community.

As previously reported, investigations into the robbery are ongoing and no-one has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Witnesses are invited to call 101 quoting 44180350307.
