A PROJECT led by the Mayor of Christchurch to celebrate the borough’s history ahead of its abolition next year is taking shape.

Councillor Lesley Dedman set the ball rolling on the concept to gather all of the council’s collection of notable items and documents in one place.

She hopes this will highlight the wealth of heritage the ancient borough had and serve as a permanent legacy for future generations to enjoy.

“Initial discussions on where some of the artifacts are focused my mind on getting everything under one roof,” Cllr Dedman said.

“Our plan is to put on a really good display in place from March in the Mayor’s Parlour, which as a building has so much history.

“This will include the robes, chains and regalia associated with the mayoralty.

“It will also have the wealth of notable documents that mark prominent parts of the borough’s history.”

A small amount of funding is needed for the project, alongside the time of council officers, to pull the project together.

To secure this, Cllr Dedman addressed the resources committee last week to ask for time to be given at an upcoming meeting to discuss a report on her initiative.

This was met with positive feedback from members at the meeting and is now due to appear on the agenda in October or December.

Councillor Peter Hall, chairman of the resources committee, said: “I think it is important.

“Our heritage is part of Christchurch and although it is a shame we are losing that, it is important we do keep a record for future generations and see we have put it all together.

“I’m sure we can find some funds for the mayor to do that.”

Alongside the display in the Mayor’s Parlour, Cllr Dedman is planning to hold an interactive event in the Priory to recognise Christchurch’s history.

“Since I started the concept off, it has taken a life of its own and a lot of people have provided their time and support, even at the early stages,” Cllr Dedman added.

“We are going to get everyone involved with the event in the Priory and it is going to be a big remembrance of the borough’s history.

“The plan is for it to also take place in March. I’m really looking forward to this coming together and hopefully it will be a real success as we near the end of the council’.”
