RESEARCHERS at Bournemouth University are marking its 25th anniversary by celebrating its achievements in the last quarter of a century.

A special edition of the Bournemouth Research Chronicle details the ground-breaking research carried out across a wide range of disciplines.

It includes work done in the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, where Professor Roger Baker and his team have spent decades exploring the link between stressful events in our lives and the impact on our mental and physical health.

Their work has seen the development of an Emotional Processing Scale which is helping to change the way in which practitioners approach wellbeing.

The Faculty of Media and Communication has examined the origins of modern-day broadcasting and the evolution of political communication.

And the Faculty of Science and Technology has undertaken research in areas such as biodiversity and environmental change, including taking steps towards getting an endangered creature included on an international list of threatened species.

The university’s Disaster Management Centre, established in 2001, delivers training to senior government ministers and their representatives.

And Professor Heather Hartwell’s research career in nutrition has seen her examine the food on offer in establishments such as prisons, hospitals and workplace canteens in a bid to improve public health.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor John Vinney said: “We have always aimed to ensure that our research is of benefit to society and is produced in collaboration with partners outside of academia.

“This is very much the aspiration that underpins our Fusion model, which draws together research, education and practice.”

The university has also launched its BU2025 strategy, giving details of its vision and ambition for the future.

It aims to focus its attention on five themes - Business and Economic Sustainability, Digital and Technological Futures, Environment, Culture and Heritage, Global Security and Health and Wellbeing.

A spokesman for the university said: “BU2025 is the next step in BU’s development, building on our success. We have retained the core of what makes BU different and the culture and approach that our students and staff value.”

The strategic plan stresses the vision of the university is “to be recognised worldwide as a leading university for inspiring learning, advancing knowledge and enriching society through the fusion of education, research and practice..”
