PLANS to extend the lifespan of a quarry near Bournemouth Airport have been approved.

The green light means hundreds of thousands of tonnes of extra material can now be removed Hurn Quarry.

The application to extend the site’s use through until 2031 were submitted back in 2016 ahead of the existing permission expiring next year.

Members of Dorset County Council’s regulatory committee approved the proposals at a meeting last week.

Residents had voiced concerns that the quarry work could have a long-term impact on their homes.

Hurn Parish Council had objected the plans, however the application was given the green light.

Hurn Quarry has operated since 2004 when temporary permission was first granted for the removal of sand and gravel.

The existing agreement allows for 1.8m tonnes of material to be removed over 14 years and requires that the land be restored by 2019.
