I AM writing in response to the unfortunate headline, ‘Town’s elderly a burden’ in the Daily Echo (July 31).
As the portfolio holder for adult social care in Bournemouth, together with my colleague, Cllr Susan Phillips, our older persons champion, I can confirm that the comments have caused real anger from some of our more senior residents. Frankly, I am not surprised.
I would like to put the record straight. All our local residents, whatever their age or wherever they live within Bournemouth, Christchurch or Poole, are of equal importance.
Most, if not all older people enhance the vibrant community life we all enjoy, not only by the council tax they pay but through the selfless service they often contribute. Some residents need special care as they age. It is incumbent on all of us to love, care and treasure elderly people in our society so that they never feel themselves to be a burden. This is a priority for Bournemouth council as I am sure it will be for the new administration.
CLLR BLAIR CRAWFORD Cabinet member for adult social care, West Southbourne ward, Bournemouth Borough Council
