AFTER one of the longest spells of hot weather in many years, the UK's heatwave has officially come to an end - at least for now.

Residents have woken to lashing rain this morning after squalls broke out yesterday afternoon. A yellow weather warning for rain and wind is in place until 3pm.

A number of events were due to take place today, including the Mudeford Arts Festival and Bournemouth's third Metropole Market.

However, the organisers of the market have issued a statement to warn visitors there will be no stalls today due to the high winds.

"A decision has also been taken to scale back on the outdoor entertainment offered, which will go ahead at the Lansdowne end of Holdenhurst Road including, rain permitting, the freak show at 2.15pm," the spokesperson said.

"We have not taken these decisions lightly and have been advised to do so by the vice president of the National Outdoor Events Association, Andy Grove.

"The health and safety of our visitors, traders and entertainers is of paramount importance to us in all that we do.

"It is very unfortunate after all these weeks and months of extraordinary weather conditions that the day it decides to break is the day of our Metropole Market."

Swanage Carnival is going ahead as planned.

Committee member Becky Mack said stalls are opening up at Sandpit Field and live music is due to get under way around midday.

Bands and floats are preparing for the 3pm procession and crowds are expected to enjoy live music, food and drinks until 11pm tonight.

"This has taken a whole year to organise and we're not going to let the weather ruin it,” she said.

“It's a bit frustrating but everyone's in good spirits and we're getting on with it."

Organisers from the Mudeford Arts Festival say exhibitors have been advised not to turn up.

A spokesperson said: "Due to the terrible weather conditions we have advised all crafters, artists and entertainers not to turn up today.

"We're really sorry.

"Despite the horrible weather we are still running a much-reduced festival in the church tent and our living arts tents.

"We have refreshments and toasted paninis.

"We would love to see anyone who can get down here."
