TRAVELLER incursions have cost Bournemouth council more than £19,000 since the beginning of April.

Revealed at Tuesday’s meeting of the council, cabinet member for housing, Cllr Robert Lawton, said that the council had spent £19,052 this financial year on dealing with unauthorised encampments.

He added that although the figure was lower than the spend last year, “additional legislation” was needed to help local authorities better manage travellers.

“Since April the council has spent £19,052 on unauthorised traveller encampments and spending has dropped from last year due to precautionary work carried out.

“The council has strongly suggested that legislation needs to be improved and additional legislation is needed.”

Councils across Dorset have been working on a county-wide gypsy and traveller document which aims to provide permanent and transit sites for travellers over the next 15 years.
