POOLE Bridge is closed today and tomorrow for "urgent" remedial work.

The unplanned measure comes after an issue was identified during an inspection last Friday.

Borough of Poole engineers visited the site on Monday and carried out temporary work to ensure the bridge could continue to lift.

Contractors also attended and assessed the work required, which involves addressing a number of tie rods on the walkways of the lifting leaves.

To carry out the work Poole Bridge will be closed to vehicles between 9.30am and 3.30pm today and tomorrow.

During this time one footpath will remain open for use by pedestrians and cyclists. A barge will be placed under the lifting leaves to enable the work to be carried out. Marine vessels will still be able to pass and the bridge will operate in single leaf lifting mode from 6.30am today until 6.30pm on tomorrow.

Borough of Poole said they "apologise for any inconvenience this may cause".

Road traffic is advised to use the Twin Sails Bridge.
