AN old cattle shed on Hengistbury Head is to be replaced with two shipping containers.

The site, north west of the visitor's centre, is described as "remote" by Bournemouth council, however the application has faced some complications due to the presence of asbestos in the shed's roof, and an initial objection from Natural England – later overturned.

The shed was built in 1987 and is said to be "in very poor disrepair".

A report by planning officer Colin Tebb states: "The impact of the proposal will improve the general appearance of the area, provided the storage containers are clad as suggested with treated (and stained) timber."

Consent was granted for the work. The asbestos will be removed by a professional contractor, the application says.

Hengistbury Head Visitor Centre plans to store tools and equipment at the containers, with an outdoor area for workshops and training.
