CHRISTCHURCH Labour Party has called on MP Sir Christopher Chope to attend a public meeting to explain his actions in objecting to the 'upskirting' Bill in the House of Commons last month.

The veteran Conservative politician has been subjected to widespread criticism for his actions in recent weeks.

A statement from Christchurch Labour Party chair Andrew Dunne says a pro-forma reply Sir Christopher is sending in response to people writing to him about the issue is "quite unbelievable".

Mr Dunne adds he has spoken to party members and other constituents who believe the Christchurch MP needs to "urgently" attend a public meeting.

The statement says: "Sir Christopher must answer his constituents’ questions about his behaviour in Parliament on this matter, and on other matters, such as bringing his own bill (how ironic) suggesting that people are now charged for using the NHS, for the likes of GP appointments and hospital surgery (defying the whole raison d’être of the NHS, setup by Nye Bevan 70 years ago this week), and his peculiar voting record."

Speaking days after objecting to the Private Members' Bill, Sir Christopher told the Daily Echo he backed measures to make 'upskirting' illegal, but not the way the Government had gone about it.

Since objecting to the initial Bill the Government introduced its own Bill, which Sir Christopher has supported.
