A man has suffered life-changing injuries after a fight at Pokesdown railway station.

Police were called to Pokesdown Railway Station at 5.51pm on Thursday following reports of people fighting.

Officers from British Transport Police and Dorset Police attended.

A spokesperson for BTP said: "Officers were called to Pokesdown rail station following reports of an altercation on the platform between two people.

"Officers attended the scene and one man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"He remains in hospital with injuries that are believed to be life changing but not life threatening.

"A 27-year-old man from Jersey was arrested on suspicion of assault. He remains in police custody."

The incident caused disruption on the railway network, with delays to Bournemouth-bound services from Christchurch.

Pokesdown station's westbound platform was cordoned off while police officers examine the scene.

There were also reports the air ambulance had been called to the scene.

South Western Railway said: "While emergency services attend to the incident, the line towards Bournemouth is blocked.

"In order to mitigate the delays and consequent congestion caused by this problem some short-notice alterations to services may be necessary.

"We are sorry for any disruption to your journey today."
