A SCHOOL catering for young people with emotional, social and health needs has received a glowing report following a visit from government inspectors.

Tregonwell Academy, which operates on three sites across Bournemouth, was rated as Outstanding in an Ofsted report which praised every aspect of its provision.

The school also offers alternative provision where pupils can be referred from mainstream schools for fixed-term exclusion packages.

Primary age pupils attend the Nigel Bowes campus in Ensbury Park and secondary go to the Petersfield campus in Boscombe East.

The school also runs the Throop Learning Centre, offering places to those who need a quiet environment due to issues including illness, anxiety, medical conditions or pregnancy.

Inspector Steffi Penny wrote to Nicki Morton, Director of Special Needs at the academy, following the inspection.

She said: “Staff know each pupil well. They can foresee potential triggers that might lead to slips in behaviour. As a result, incidents are avoided and the focus in lessons is on learning and not behaviour management.

“Pupils are respectful of each other and the adults who care for them. All staff have regular, high-quality training. Pupils told me that they feel safe and secure in school.”

The report said attendance increases rapidly for most pupils during their time at the school, despite being inconsistent and low at previous schools.

And she added: “When pupils fail to attend school, staff are diligent in checking that they are safe and putting measures into place to improve the pupil’s attendance.”

Almost all pupils continue in education, training or employment when they leave Year 11.

The academy is part of the Ambitions Academies Trust and CEO Sian Thomas said: “I am absolutely thrilled that Ofsted recognise the relentless focus that all staff have on learning. During the visit the inspectors saw for themselves how passionate all staff are, not just at Tregonwell but across the Trust in ensuring high expectations are maintained.”

Nicki Morton, Director of Special Education at the Trust, added: “At Tregonwell we pride ourselves on the focus placed on the holistic development of our young people. We are very proud of all their achievements. Well done to all our pupils and staff and thank you to all that have supported the school over the years.”
