A BOURNEMOUTH MP is calling on the council to sort out dangerous parking outside schools.

Tobias Ellwood, Member of Parliament for Bournemouth East, has written to Bournemouth Borough Council calling for a comprehensive review of school transport.

He said: "The number of letters I have received from concerned parents indicates that this should be a priority for the council "A big concern is that not enough children are cycling to school and the reason is that the roads are too dangerous.

"We need a comprehensive network of cycle paths and routes across Bournemouth. This would help school children, tourists and commuters."

He said that some children would always need to be dropped off by car at school and that road layouts should be changed to ensure that parents could do this safely.

He suggested that the council should come up with a plan to improve the parking situation outside schools but that parents also need to be educated about the dangers of parking on yellow lines.

Mr Ellwood, who is a governor of Queen's Park Infants School, said: "The paramount concern is safety and parents do want to make sure that their children get though the school gates safely.

"They are not going to do this if it involves parking three or four streets away from the school."

He suggested that road layouts could be changed to create dropping-off lanes similar to ones at airports.

He also said it was important that the council ensured there were bus services, which allowed children to take buses to school.

A spokesman from Bournemouth Borough Council said that they had received the letter from Mr Ellwood and that council officers would arrange a meeting with him to discuss the issue.

Mr Ellwood is visiting Queen's Park Junior School on Friday, July 13, to discuss the issue of parking with the head teacher
