CRIMES against businesses increased by 10 per cent in the first three months of the year, including a "dramatic" rise in arson, new figures showed.

Insurance firm Axa said the number of business crime cases settled was a tenth higher than a year ago, with arson claims rising by 28 per cent.

Theft remains the most common cause of a crime-related insurance claim, followed by malicious damage such as smashed windows or graffiti.

Axa property insurance manager Neil Mercier said: "These results make for worrying reading.

"Last year, the number of crime-related claims made by businesses increased in each consecutive quarter and if the same thing happens again this year, it could spell disaster for thousands of UK businesses.

"We are urging all business owners and managers to review their security measures and procedures."

Dorset Business chief executive Peter Scott said: "I fear that the national statistics mask many unreported crimes.

"Besides, business crime comes in many guises - crimes against business, within business and, yes, crimes perpetrated by businesses.

"While the national trend is worrying - and we should not be complacent - the business community in Dorset is blessed with a relatively safe environment."

A Dorset Police spokesman said: "We treat all crime seriously and all crimes are thoroughly investigated."

Due to Home Office policy, Dorset Police statistics do not differentiate between domestic and business crime.

Dorset Police urges anyone with information about crime to contact 01202 222222.
