MOVIE quotes were written in the sand on Bournemouth Beach yesterday to celebrate 50 years of Bournemouth Film School.
A group of around 10 Visual Communication and Graphic Design students from the Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) were joined by staff and alumni close to Bournemouth Pier to make the most of the bright sunshine while drawing the giant lettering.
They used garden rakes and other tools to drag up the sand and create the patterns on the seafront as people walking along the promenade looked on.
The aim, said Professor Stuart Bartholomew CBE, principal and vice chancellor of AUB, was to highlight the success of the students who have gone on to work on some big blockbuster films including Spectre, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Gravity.
He added: “Bournemouth Film School is proud of its rich history spanning more than 50 years of Film Production, Animation Production and latterly Visual Effects Design and Production at Arts University Bournemouth.
“Key to this longevity is the underpinning ethos of AUB’s learning and teaching, which is creatively driven, vocationally focused and supported by state of the art equipment and facilities.”
He added that Bournemouth Film School began in the 1960s and has gone on to become the UK’s largest film school outside of London, with an international reputation in the film industry.
Professor Bartholomew said that some notable BFS alumni include Simon Beaufoy, Chris Dickens, Nick Love, Suri Krishnamma, Sara Sugarman, and Mel Giedroyc.
Simon Beaufoy, who studied at the AUB, said that it was ‘the best two years’ as the film school runs like the industry.
He added: “You had to present films and pitches. You had to work with directors, you had to work with a script, and use professional actors. It was made this way deliberately, to replicate the industry, which gives students a great head start.”
The Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) has an industry employment rate of 97.4-per-cent within six months of graduation, according to data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency.
Starting from next Monday, February 22, the AUB will be teasing pictures of the quotes, which are all from films that AUB alumni has worked on, in a competition running on their social media pages with daily prizes for the lucky winners.
