MENTAL health services across Dorset are set to expand, as a charity bids to improve support across the county.

Dorset Mind, who have provided mental health support in Dorset for 70 years, hope to extend services while boosting the number available.

And with a new chief executive and a strong trustee board building on the existing foundations, the charity has also just announced new patron, Dr Andrew Mayers, who has joined the charity as well.

Chris Price, chief executive, said: "I am delighted to be leading and driving Dorset Mind at a really critical stage as it is poised to make a huge difference by supporting more people experiencing mental health difficulties across Dorset.

"We know that there are many people who currently need our support with their mental health in order to improve their independence and quality of life.

"We are committed to continue our work alongside NHS services, local councils and other local charities and to look at ways in which we can extend those services.

"We will ensure that both new and existing services can be part of referral pathways including self-referral, thus avoiding long waiting lists.

"I am also very pleased to welcome Dr Andrew Mayers as a Patron at this important stage of our development."

Dr Mayers is a psychologist at Bournemouth University and a mental health campaigner and educator.

He said: “I have been following the work of Dorset Mind for a number of years. I am delighted to have been appointed Patron, as I am inspired by the drive and vision that Chris Price has brought to the charity.

"I am confident that existing services will be enhanced and new opportunities for mental health support will be developed. I see my role as using my local and national influence to promote that work and help facilitate some of those new opportunities."

As part of the planned expansion, Dorset Mind is looking for people to help them to provide better mental health services for the people of Dorset.

In particular, they are currently looking for a new Trustee with a strong HR background.
