A MAJOR £1.7 million expansion to Winton Primary School will provide more than 200 extra school places.

The new teaching facility is part of major expansion programme which has boosted pupil numbers to more than 800 and making it one of the biggest primary schools in the county.

Poole-based contractors Stepnell worked with the school and Bournemouth Borough Council to deliver the new single-storey extension which includes a drama studio, music room, four new classrooms, an office and supporting accommodation.

The school’s car park and drop-off facilities have also been improved.

Headteacher Neil Tarchetti said: “We are delighted with the finished expansion and excited by the enhanced learning environment it offers to our pupils.

“They now have a first rate setting in which to learn.”

The school raised £500 for the project through it’s Buy-a-Brick campaign and now the engraved bricks are part of the new extension.

Stepnell contracts manager Trevor Middleton said: “Having been involved in the construction of this wonderful new school extension and knowing how important it is to the community, we are delighted to see the building officially opened for pupils and staff to use and enjoy.

“This new facility will provide a modern learning environment which we hope will benefit Winton School pupils for many years to come.”

Last week pupils and staff were joined by Bob the Builder to celebrate the opening of their new extension.

Cllr Nicola Greene, cabinet member for education and children’s services at the borough council, said: “It’s fantastic to see the expansion work completed and the enhancement to the facilities at Winton Primary School.

“The expansion works form part of the council’s plans to increase the number of primary school places in Bournemouth in order to help meet the continuing demand.”
