THE UK Independence Party secured their first ever Bournemouth council seat yesterday - and the Greens may also be on the verge of a historic victory.

Although the Conservatives held the council with a resounding majority, the opposition changed dramatically, with Labour and the Liberal Democrats wiped out entirely.

Instead the only confirmed opposition so far is Independent Anne Rey, who topped the poll in Throop and Muscliff and 21-year-old UKIP councillor Laurence Fear, who won in Kinson South.

The vote is so close in Winton East that a recount is going to be held on Monday morning. It looks likely the Green Party could secure at least one council seat.

Among the high-profile Labour casualties were group leader Ben Grower, who has been a councillor for 41 years, former Mayor Beryl Baxter, and Dennis Gritt.

Cllrs Grower and Baxter did not even stay at the Littledown count to hear their result once it was apparent they had lost.

The Conservatives also celebrated the return of Stephen MacLoughlin, who lost his seat by the narrowest of margins in 2011. The former council leader had been engulfed in controversy when it was revealed that his council laptop had been used to view pornography.

The final result saw the Conservatives increase their number of seats from 44 to 49.
