A STATE-of-the-art library and community resource centre could be on the horizon for Blandford.

Dorset County Council has applied for around £1.9 million from the Big Lottery Fund.

If granted, the cash from the Community Libraries Programme would go towards a building on its site in West Street, replacing the existing cramped accommodation at The Tabernacle.

Director of adult and community services Steve Pitt said: "We are seizing this opportunity to bid for external funding from the Lottery Community Libraries Programme to improve library facilities in Blandford.

"There is no guarantee that we will get the funding but we want to take every opportunity we can to develop libraries in Dorset and to obtain good value for money for the community."

The Big Lottery Fund has earmarked £80 million for its Community Libraries Programme.

Applications are competitive and open to all 149 public library authorities in England, but each authority may submit only one bid.

Applicants have to demonstrate how they will use the money to fund a library that offers more than traditional library services, and work with the community.

The lottery bid will be for around £1.9 million, with the overall costs for the project expected to be in the region of £3 million.

The council will learn by September whether the bid has been successful.

The vision is for library and community facilities including family learning activities, additional public access computers, adult education, information, advice and guidance, tourist information and a base for a community development worker.

It would also provide a replacement for public toilets and provide new, accessible space and services for the whole community.
