OH we do like to be beside the seaside.

Pupils at St Mark's primary school in Bournemouth have a bright and colourful new sea themed library thanks to the efforts of the School and Parents Association.

Youngsters can climb aboard their reading boat, The Talbot, or choose to splash around on the welcoming bright blue carpet.

There's also a beach, sea creature bean bags and fish swimming above the books.

"The old library shelves were condemned so we decided to move it to a child accessible place in the school" said head teacher Caroline Burn. "The school council was consulted on the theme and went with a sea theme."

Chair of the association, Dawn Newman, said £10,400 was raised in the last academic year and was presented to the school in September 2014.

The impressive sum was raised through many events including three discos, a Christmas fair, a May fair, two adults' quiz nights and an Easter egg raffle.

Members of the association also provide refreshments at school events including sports days and shows.

"A solid but relatively small team of volunteers run these events and, as you can imagine, put in a lot of work to pull them off" she said.

"It has been brilliant to see our efforts produce an increasing amount of money each year and we are very grateful to all the parents that spend out at the events.

"So far this academic year we have raised £5,670 and are busy preparing for the May fair.

In the last two years the association has started using the easyfundraising.org website to boost its funds, a rag bag bin has been placed in the playground and employers have been approached to provide matched fund raising.

Dawn urged members of the public to attend the May fair, to be held at the school in Talbot village from 11am until 2pm on Saturday May 9.
