Purbeck Police are asking drivers not to swear at lollipop ladies when caught up in traffic around Upton.

An accident on the A35 Upton bypass caused long delays in the area this morning, on top of delays already caused by gas replacement works on Blandford Road.

Police have just posted on their Facebook page: "If you are affected by the traffic diversion in Upton please DO NOT use Moorland Way or one of the other roads as a diversion.

"The increased traffic presents a real safety hazard to children and parents. It saddens me to tell you that the lollipop lady has been abused by motorists using language that would embarrass a sailor.

"You have to wonder what sort of person screams abusive and foul language at a woman doing such a worthwhile job and in front of children.

"If you have a complaint or suggestion about the road works and diversion I would suggest taking it up with Dorset County Council or the Highways department.

"We will monitor the situation and consult with our partner agencies to see if there is a better approach. In the meantime I’m sure most of you will agree that our children’s safety is worth a little bit of inconvenience.

"Please share this post to get the message out there. Thank you for your cooperation,

"Carry on (and follow the diversion.)"
