MORE than 50 bands will play at the 25th Swanage Jazz Festival this summer.

The traditional jazz programme is headlined by Keith Nichols’ Blue Devils, playing the early big band music of Duke Ellington.

Magnificent Seven, a new band paying homage to the early jazz masters and the swing era, is also set to perform.

A host of other artists such as Amy Roberts, Arun Ghosh, Stephanie Trick and Ben Holder are set to take to the stage for the July event.

Dave Brennan’s Jubilee Jazz Band will lead the annual town parade on Saturday morning before playing the gospel service at Swanage Methodist Church the following day.

A spokesman said: “Swanage Jazz Festival celebrates its 25th year with a programme with over 50 bands.

“The programme includes many top bands on the festival circuit and several exciting new young stars.

“Topping the bill at the main marquee are the brilliant singer and comedian Ian Shaw and the Darius Brubeck Quartet, led by Dave Brubeck’s pianist son.

“Top singers Tina May and Lee Gibson’s Sophisticated Ladies feature songs by great jazz singers, American saxophonist Greg Abate, will play a tribute to Charlie Parker; and top gypsy guitarist Fapy Lafertin with his quartet will play the music of Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club of Paris.

“Preceding the Festival on Friday afternoon is the popular Jazz Dance at Harman’s Cross village Hall, combined with the steam train ride.”

Two marquees will be on Sandpit Field, while other venues include the Methodist Church and The Conservative Club.

There will also be free performances at The Red Lion, The Crows Nest, The Old Stone Quay, British Legion and on the seafront.
