A CLEAN up operation is taking place on beaches in Poole following the severe weather on New Year's Day.

At Sandbanks today a tractor has been clearing sand to allow pedestrian access to the promenade.

Borough of Poole said from Monday two tractors will be in action and an an excavator will also be used to drag sand away from the prom wall.

Work will be carried out from Branksome Chine to Shore Road, although as further severe weather is expected residents are asked to be patient as sand may be blown back onto the promenade.

“We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause and thank beach users for their patience and understanding,” said a spokesman.

With a number of trees felled by high winds, those affecting main highways have been prioritised.

Once those have been cleared the council will focus on other open spaces.

There has been some flooding of roads and officers have been working hard to ensure disruption was minimised.
