PARENTS and residents are being consulted about plans for another brand new primary school in Bournemouth.

The proposed £6 million Avonwood Primary School will open next September if planning permission is granted.

It will be built on the same site as secondary schools Avonbourne and Harewood Colleges and will address a drastic shortage of primary places in the east of Bournemouth.

Plans are also under way for a new primary school at nearby St Peter’s School in Holdenhurst Avenue.

A public exhibition of the plans will be held at Avonbourne College on Tuesday November 26 from 4pm until 8pm, followed by three information evenings for prospective parents on November 28, December 16 and January 7, all at 6pm.

The new school has already been approved by the government and will be run by the Avonbourne International Business and Enterprise Academy Trust.

Executive head teacher of the Trust, Debbie Godfrey-Phaure, inset, said: “When we heard of Bournemouth Borough Council’s urgent need to provide more primary places for our local children, we knew we wanted to help.

“The whole of the Trust community is ready to make a difference. At our site we have available land to develop a new school, plus there are already excellent facilities in place that could be shared.”

The school will have a phased opening, taking in 60 children in reception each year from September 2014 until it is full six years later.

A current shortage of places means many children are having to travel long distances to school and siblings often attend different schools.

Many children from the east of the borough are attending schools in north Bournemouth.
