JAPANESE artefacts will be displayed alongside works of art in a new exhibition at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum.
The display, entitled 50:50 Inspired by Japan; mosaics, textiles and paper, features work by renowned artists Cleo Mussi and Matthew Harris.
It marks a return to the gallery for Cleo Mussi, whose previous show A-Z A Hand Book, in 2009, was the Russell-Cotes’ best-ever selling exhibition.
As part of the exhibition, the artists have chosen artefacts from the Russell-Cotes Japanese collections which reflect the couple’s interests, and those of the gallery’s founders, Sir Merton and Annie Russell-Cotes.
Matthew Harris and Cleo Mussi both studied textiles at Goldsmiths College and have spent the last 20 years working in close proximity to each other, but 50:50 is the first show in which their work can be seen together.
Heritage manager, Sue Hayward said: “Cleo and Matthew’s trip to Japan mirrors our founders’ own visit to Japan in 1885.
“Merton and Annie Russell-Cotes collected a fascinating cocktail of colourful tourist souvenirs and the very finest contemporary art available at the time.”
The exhibition will open on Easter Bank Holiday Monday April 1, and runs until Sunday 15 September.
