ONE of Bournemouth’s top hotels is strengthening its literary links by appointing a Poet in Residence.

Hotel Miramar will boast the services of local poet, author and musician Steve Biddle from next month and a host of interesting events are planned.

The hotel, on Bournemouth’s East Cliff, has a long history of attracting artists and authors and was the favourite haunt of author JRR Tolkien who stayed there regularly for more than 30 years.

It is widely accepted that the Lord of the Rings, Hobbit and Middle Earth creator penned much of his work from the relaxing gardens.

A blue commemorative plaque can be seen at the hotel entrance in memory of his time in the town until his death in 1972.

The first of many events will be Poetry Corner on Monday, November 19, when members of the public, hotel guests and local poets will get the chance to share their work and take part in a general discussion.

Workshops, seminars and exhibitions will be held throughout the year and a bespoke poetry service will be offered to wedding couples at the hotel.

“For me, poetry is not only about sharing thoughts and dreams, it is about engaging with people” said Steve. “The Tolkien connection is also appealing.”

And hotel director David Bailey added: “Steve is an amazingly talented poet and a born entertainer. We have some exciting plans ahead, including monthly poetry evenings, workshops and other events.

“I think Tolkien would be enormously proud that another writer is set to establish close links with his favourite haunt.”
