IT had been years since I’d eaten Thai, so I was really looking forward to my visit to Tiien Bar & Restaurant in Broadstone. Full of expectations we entered the glass-fronted restaurant through a door located on the pavement of Moor Road.

It was a Friday evening but the contemporary style restaurant was not as busy as we’d expected.

The welcome was not particularly warm. I always think it’s a nice touch to have a few complimentary prawn crackers given to you on arrival, but we had to ask for these while we perused the menu.

Thai menus are often vast and exciting and this one certainly didn’t disappoint. We could have opted for one of the set menus, which may have been better value, but on these we’d have had to have chosen between the mixed starters or aromatic duck and we were keen to taste both. We had a selection of spring rolls, barbecued chicken wings, chicken satay, prawn toasts and fish cakes and the first four were delicious.

The satay sauce was the best I’d tasted! The fish cakes were very rubbery, but my partner (who had travelled several times to Thailand) assured me these were very authentic. The duck was average.

For mains we could not resist the most expensive dish on the menu – steamed sea bass with chilli lemon sauce. This was fantastic. Very fresh, cooked with garlic and coriander with the sauce sensibly served on the side. This was hot but very palatable.

Our other choice of main was the chicken served with ginger and mushrooms.

This was a great dish to go with the fish, as were the jasmine rice and stir fried pak choy.

There was a good variety of wine on the list, but all were very expensive. At £20.95 the sauvignon blanc was the cheapest and we opted for this but it wasn’t served cold enough for our liking.

The quality of the food was, on the whole, very good but be prepared to pay for it. Also don’t expect anything you don’t ask for, including ice if you want a glass of water!
