WHEN the guy sitting to your right is wearing red eye shadow, fangs and a blood splattered cape and the woman to your left is sporting a bulging cleavage, corset and bat wings you instinctively know this isn’t the usual Saturday night out!
Dressing up as an extra is quite normal I discovered at Vampires Rock which clearly has a cult following of die-hard fans.
Tapping into our fascination with vampires whilst taking a riotous, raunchy romp through rock anthems stretching from Sweet to Glee, White Snake to Queen, the show enjoys the duel benefits of being both a rock concert and theatrical production.
The basic and rather woolly storyline sees evil Baron Von Rockula (the show’s creator and producer Steve Steinman) running a seedy vampire inhabited club in 2030 New York and searching for a new bride/fresh blood.
The tongue-in-cheek humour is best off the cuff delivered by natural-born entertainer Steinman, interacting with a very vocal audience, but scripted, repeated sexual gags from Bossley the Janitor became irritating.
There was plenty to dazzle our senses with a bat-shaped set, pyrotechnics, fire eaters, and sexy cage dancers, but the show really took flight in part two as it launched into a fully-fledged rock concert bringing the audience to its feet.
Former Meat Loaf impersonator Steinman and Emily Clark (Pandora) were truly brilliant vocalists who, supported by a great Lost Boys band- delivered songs by Bonnie Tyler, Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi, Suzi Quatro, Ac/DC, Rainbow etc – eventually leaving us all wanting more.
