Reeny was born on the same day as Elvis and is living out her final days in a rest home.

It’s the kind of scenario that gives old rockers of certain age food for thought and a few palpitations. It makes a great play though.

Joyce Branagh’s drama, written specially for the Forest Forge Theatre Company, is a tale of life, love and mistakes as seen through the eyes of a seventy-something widow.

But it also dwells on the soundtrack to her life played out through her own personal devotion to Desert Island Discs.

It’s a complex tale with Jacqueline Redgewell playing the old Reeny, though her younger self is portrayed by Angelea Bain and Bronya Deutsch, who also appear as a variety of characters including her daughter, granddaughter and Desert Island Discs presenters Sue Lawley and Kirsty Young.

Charlie Buckland meanwhile plays her nurse, her late husband and her lover. He is also, briefly, Desert Island Discs founder Roy Plomley With several back projected contributions, the play examines the role that music plays in our lives. How certain songs prompt memories and emotions. And why the hits of Elvis and Aretha can make old bones suddenly young again.
