GLITTER cannons, wedding dresses, line dancing – it could only be Steps!

Pop’s perkiest fivesome were at the BIC on Monday evening as part of their UK arena tour, which marks their 20th (yes, 20th!) anniversary.

Donned in sparkly trackies (the boys) and thigh high boots (the girls), Claire, Lisa, H, Lee and Faye stormed their way through all their old hits, such as Better Best Forgotten, Deeper Shade of Blue, Better the Devil You Know, One For Sorrow and, of course, 5, 6, 7, 8.

The set was interspersed with a few newer tracks from their latest album, Tears on the Dancefloor, all upbeat disco numbers following the same catchy formula which shot them to stardom 20 years ago. Well, if it ain’t broke...

The venue was absolutely packed out, with loyal fans of all ages, who could still remember all the dance moves to old favourites.

While there were some calmer moments when the band showcased their vocals with a couple of ballads, fun is what Steps do best and, for the most part, they had the audience up on their feet.

We were taken from a nightclub to a country and western saloon, and finally a wedding for the Tragedy encore.

Subtlety has never been their thing, and it was full-on wedding dresses for the finale – which went down a storm with the fans, showing the band has just as much appeal today as it did in the 1990s.

Just as much fun now as it was in my student days.
