WITH her debut album, The New Classic, Australian rapper Iggy Azalea proves she’s able to hold her own alongside male counterparts. The 23-year-old, known for not mincing her words, already has the backing of US hip-hop star TI and her ex, A$AP Rocky. Following on from her 2012 EP Glory, the record includes 12 tracks including singles Fancy featuring Charli XCX, Work and Change Your Life featuring TI.
The opening operatic notes of Walk The Line introduces the album, before she launches into quick-fire rhymes accompanied with heavy beats.
Azalea, whose beef with fellow female rapper Azealia Banks led to her losing her deal with Interscope in 2012, refers to her record label struggles in Don’t Need Y’all and emulates Jay Z in 100 as she sings: “Don’t try me, man, you know I will.”
You know she would, too.
In an industry dominated by men, with the exceptions of Missy Elliott and Lil’ Kim, Azalea deserves praise for speaking her mind and standing up for womankind.
