Ideas to attract visitors to Poole
A RECENT Echo article referred to the lack of ideas to attract visitors to Poole, especially when the Hamworthy side of the Twin Sails Bridge is developed.
How about two glamorous tall glass towers similar to the power station chimneys demolished decades ago?
They would be iconic tributes to the past, landmarks for shipping but now with high 360 degree views, complimented by restaurants, shops and landscaped gardens.
They would be an all weather attraction offering wonderful seascapes looking towards Brownsea Island , the historic old town, over the Purbecks and Corfe, and a monorail tour around the bay, Sandbanks and Upton House.
There could be free parking and entry on presentation of your ID and Poole council tax documents.

A glass tower on the Hamworthy side would only give you views of the industrial parts of the Quay around the old bridge such as Sunseekers yards and the timber yard on the opposite side or a few scattered boats moored behind the RNLI and Asda, plus of course the dual carriageway along Holes Bay, complete with car dealership and lots of new and secondhand cars or the tops of the many ageing Victorian houses along lower Hamworthy and the gaudily painted tower blocks of flats at Sterte ......... I for one would not bother to pay to get an elevated view of any of that lot!

Do not hold your breath whilst our decision makers / leaders wring their hands, etc !!
Some towns are a delight to visit from the first moment of arrival but Poole is much more of an acquired taste - no wonder visitors aren't always impressed by the town that so many of us love and wish to see improve.
I'm told Singapore was, not so long ago, filthy once but now it is a place with a sense of 'place' and of self-respect second to none : the cleanliness is very noticeable and the welcome is palpable.

im 17 and i dont quite understand why they whant to spend money on atracting visitors when the kid's havent got anything to do and because of this were getting bored so we find are amusement witch often is on the wrong side of the law most of the kid's will get into a police chase because of this so please dont bother atracting tourist when it aint pleasant for those who have nuffin to do
I know the borough can't do everything because so many of us haven't enough money to pay them for it. So if you really don't have anything to do, try volunteering, or better still try organising a volunteering group.
Good luck - anything helpful to your/our town must be better than being bored. I hope you agree.

I just checked wikipedia's history of Poole and it is full of things to attract tourists from war, pirates, smugglers, nature, politics, leisure, art, music, exploration, invasion..... how about caring about our history and our fabulous natural environment. Maybe get some good gardeners for the parks. The museums could do with a little more to attract visitors more than once. Don't forget people aren't all under 5 years old - make it interesting to all age groups and engage the mind.
If we love what we have then maybe others will come to see it.
Why not trying to make the most of what we have instead of spending money on things that actually serve no real purpose and often look stupid and/or ugly - please!

My suggestion is free entry on production of Council tax documents for Poole residents

How about getting known for our cleanliness and welcoming hospitality as visitors enjoy our well-cared-for historical (and not so ancient) assets ; harbour, heathland and the built environment that really could do with more attention to its preservation and/or improvement. Do not hold your breath whilst our decision makers / leaders wring their hands, etc !! I note regularly you have your fair share of 'online' remarks without the courage of going public so what's the big deal ?
