Poole Council is opposing the registration of Branksome Rec as a town green on grounds which may not be relevant (Daily Echo, March 15).
It is outside the scope of the legislation for Poole Council to argue the case on grounds of desirability; it can only do so by challenging the evidence presented by the applicants.
A recent ruling in the Supreme Court on a green application at Redcar on Teesside shows that there may be more than one use of a green, and that provided the recreational use by local people can coexist with other uses, there may well be no problem.
So if Branksome Rec is registered as a green, it seems likely that the various uses of the land will continue as now.
What is all the fuss about?

So if the various uses of the land will continue as now, why on earth are people pursuing town green status that is possibly going to cost the taxpayer hundreds of thousands of pounds? Leave it as it is and save the money!
