Green challenge at Poole facing red light?

Poole Council is opposing the registration of Branksome Rec as a town green on grounds which may not be relevant (Daily Echo, March 15).

It is outside the scope of the legislation for Poole Council to argue the case on grounds of desirability; it can only do so by challenging the evidence presented by the applicants.

A recent ruling in the Supreme Court on a green application at Redcar on Teesside shows that there may be more than one use of a green, and that provided the recreational use by local people can coexist with other uses, there may well be no problem.

So if Branksome Rec is registered as a green, it seems likely that the various uses of the land will continue as now.

What is all the fuss about?

So if the various uses of the land will continue as now, why on earth are people pursuing town green status that is possibly going to cost the taxpayer hundreds of thousands of pounds? Leave it as it is and save the money!

Because without Town Green status any future bright spark on Poole Council who has a mind to sell off the land for building would have very little opposition. Town Green status gives protection indefinitely.

Leave it as it is ?? The whole and sole purpose of registration of a Town Green is that it stops any development on the land in question for all time irrespective of any change of administration. Shall we mention – Solar Pyramids- Football Stadiums- Waitrose Super Markets !!!! The great advantage is that it achieves this without affecting the future use of precious open space for all the people. Don’t be fooled by the weasel words of certain Councillors they are the same ones who were very economical with the truth on the Pyramid.

David Howard says it all - why cannot our councillors understand that Town Green status means the protection of our greens FOR EVER. And - at NO COST to Poole Tax payers IF OUR COUNCIL DOES NOT OPPOSE.
Makes one wonder what other plans they have for these areas if they dont want them green for ever !!!

cyco44- Hundreds of thousands of pounds? Not a cat in h..l's chance IF the council does not oppose it. The cost would be approximately £500 should there be NO opposition -less than the cost of a month's allowance for a councillor. Now is that worth it to protect our green spaces? The council officer has spoken with economy of truth.

Basically, if the council opposes it will cost thousands of pounds. However, if they do not oppose it will not cost very much at all.
so poole council what is it to be " To oppose or not to oppose?"
( or have you already spent thousands od pounds of council tax payers money on legal bods who can tell you how to oppose it!!??)....That is the question??
