AS reported in the Daily Echo a few weeks ago, the Pirates of Poole are going to row a 32ft Cornish gig from Penzance to Poole, starting off on Saturday May 15 and, with a few stops on the way, are hoping to arrive in Poole on Sunday 30.
I am not a member of the Pirates, but after a lifetime being connected with the sea I have nothing but praise for these men.
Rowing this gig is not going to be like a row around Poole Park lake. Take it from me, it’s going to be no mean feat to carry this off and I would like the people of Poole to appreciate their efforts by being at the finish to welcome them home. They are doing this for various charities that some of the crew have close to their hearts.
This, to me and many others, should eclipse the many other attractions being held on the quay. Perhaps the tourist board could or should get involved, hopefully, with the Mayor and other groups that have connections with the historical events in our town.
Anyway, no matter who or what you are, just be there!
Just a little bit of nonsense – at the dedication and launching of the boat, a crew member looked in the boat and asked “What are those poles with bits of flat on them – what are they for?”
Good luck, good weather and most of all – get back safely.
