Sound and fury

I notice in newspapers, including the Echo, people who have some form of complaint are invariably “furious”.

At one time we Brits used to be “concerned”, “irritated”, “rather annoyed” and ultimately “very cross indeed” – or furious.

Do I assume that in the modern world people are angry as a norm and the first stage of displeasure is therefore furious?

Must be the answer I guess!

In answer to your question I would say "yes". These days confrontation seems to be the norm - watch any soap on tv.

Have you also noticed that in reports, neighbours are 'horrified', 'astounded', 'shocked'. Such extreme words make any incident appear worse that it possibly is, and is a useful tool to sell more papers!
