Branksome Rec and the town green debate

I read with amazement and, I must admit, some amusement the article entitled Grounds for Concern (Daily Echo, March 9).

Clive Smith of Poole council leisure services proclaims to the world that Branksome Recreation Ground is protected by planning and open space rules, and that town green status might make it difficult for organised football and the circus to find a place on the ground.

Yet he and Cllr Peter Adams wanted to take that space away, give it to a commercial enterprise and build a 2m high wall around a part of it – well knowing that this was against council policy.

This makes his current comments and decisions risible.

It was because of Clive Smith and Cllr Adams that it took so long, and so many meetings, and so much time and money for the planning committee to finally come to a decision in favour of the residents who did not want this to happen.

So far I have not heard of any plans for a consultation meeting with those who live around the Rec before the town green application goes to the licensing committee.

I cannot see why the council thinks it is necessary to employ a barrister when they have (I suppose) a qualified and knowledgeable legal department.

The article does not say that those in favour of the town/village green can write to the council as well as those objecting.

I feel sure that a lot of the members of the Branksome West Residents Association, as well as Friends of Branksome Recreation Ground, will be doing that within the time limit.

Finally, during the summer of 2009, at meetings with Clive Smith and Cllr Adams, as well as BRAG, we were promised that we would be given daffodil bulbs for planting before November.

These, of course, have not yet been seen – another broken promise from the council.

'So far I have not heard of any plans for a consultation meeting with those who live around the Rec'
.
Why should consultation for a town's facilities focus on a handful of people? Are you declaring independence from Poole? You get to vote in local elections that cover a large area but want special treatment for your doorstep.

mikey -so why does any planning application become advertised to those adjacent to where the proposed development take place? You obviously know nothing about this council. Obviously the Bournemouth Council is whiter than white in all of its dealings!

Clive Smith, in his article quoted in the Echo on the 8th March is talking absolute rubbish! If this is the best 'Legal Advice' he can get his hands on I suggest he asks for a refund!
I suggest he consults the Supreme Court ruling regarding the recent case in Redcar. See below:-

Councillor Gregory (His letter 5th March) Is only confirming the fears of right minded people that there is another massive Council scam looming (similar to that of the dreaded Pyramid).
The Councillors and also Council Officers (obviously under 'superior orders') are making such a song and dance of fighting the Town Green applications (at vast and uneccessary cost to the tax payer)
that only one conclusion can be drawn.
They do not want to allow the protection of Town Green status on any Council land as it would stop any development for gain on these parcels of land but would only serve to protect in perpetuity the right of residents to undertake 'Lawful sports and leisure activities' NOT as incorrectly stated by Clive Smith Cllr Collier et al to STOP sporting activities. More lies and smoke screens coming I feel. Give up Councillors, you have once again been caught out trying to deceive the tax payers.

When we see the antics of Councillors Collier, Adams and Gregory in oposition to the Town Green Applications to Branksome Rec and Baiter/Whitecliff it make one wonder just what have our councillors got planned for these areas if they dont want them to be retained for ever as green open spaces.
Councillor Gregory doesnt want them "stuck in the 20th century" - he is probably unaware that we have to thank far sighted persons in the 19th & 20th centuries for ALL the parks and recreation grounds we have today.
Our present councillors seem to want to do is "build - build - build.
Clive Smith as the council officer in charge of Leisure Services should be ashamed with himself for firstly SUPPORTING the Poole Town Football Club application to take over part of the Branksome Recreation Ground and NOW for opposing the Town Green Application to save the green area for evermore.
Bring on the council elections.

The stole Ladies walking field and built the Dolphin center on it. One reason the council don't want the Town green in place, it will stop them doing similar to Branksome rec.

@sea-poole - the comment in the letter was in reference to the green application which is a completely different process to the normal planning one.

mikey -but the principle is the same. Or do you see things differently in B'mouth with your oh, so open council that NEVER has ulterior motives for anything?
