With reference to the article in Monday’s edition of the Daily Echo, there seems to be an assumption that there is a campaign against dogs on Stanpit Marsh.

This is very unfortunate because nothing could be further from the truth.

The background to the proposal to strengthen the marsh bylaws is simply to improve the protection to migrating birds resting in transit in the unique shelter provided by Stanpit Marsh.

It has been made abundantly clear in the official notices that the intention is not to stop dogs being taken on to the Marsh; it is simply that dogs on the Marsh are on leads to preclude the possibility that in wandering they should inadvertently come into contact with roosting areas.

I speak as an owner of two dogs which enjoy the 17 acres of Stanpit recreation ground, running free off lead.

When we want to walk on Stanpit Marsh, we simply put them on their leads and have always done this, so as not to disturb the birds, or cattle and horses. It keeps the dogs cleaner and also keeps them away from fishermen and their bait.
