As a new resident in this beautiful part of the country I feel I must join in the debate on the future of the Imax building.
I don’t know of another great British seaside resort which has so willingly blocked its main access to a stunning coastline with so much concrete – the Imax building itself and the equally depressing motorway-style flyover beside it.
The borough council should remember that Bournemouth does not have the natural advantage of other major resorts, such as Southend, Brighton and Eastbourne, in having miles of ‘driveable’ promenades giving classic seaside views as you approach the town – perhaps for the first time.
Therefore surely it is all the more important that its one central access point to the sea is opened up as much as possible.
Both structures should be razed to the ground and replaced with landscaped gardens, cafes and natural meeting places in order to draw people down to the beach from the town centre.
For millions of people in this country, Bournemouth is the seaside and has one of the best beaches in the land. The sooner the council re-focuses on that, the better.
