The ladies told me to get on my bike

THE scandal surrounding England football captain John Terry has caused me to recall the days when, as a young man, my attempts to attract young ladies invariably ended in rejection and humiliation.

I could not afford a car and I used to turn up at dances on an old rusty push-bike.

I remember, on one occasion, parking my bike outside the Gaiety Ballroom in my home town of Grimsby.

As I removed my cycle clips a doorman said: “You’ll not pull tonight mate”.

He was right – I didn’t.

How ironic that now, with 'Green' credentials being in fashion, turning up on a bike will more than likely impress than not!

As you mention the John Terry issue we have teh pleasure of seeing the Great British Public in a fit of Moral outrage. Typically, hypocritically. Of course it takes two to tango. No-one is castigating the woman involved. She after all knowingly had an affair with a married man. Perhaps we all believe that women are poor, gormless dupes who cannot control their emotions and feelings and are all innocenta nd without blame. As regards his wife, golly gosh - she married a football player and he was unfaithful - duuuuhhh. Stoooooopid!
