CONGRATULATIONS must be extended to the highway authority of Bournemouth council for succeeding in bringing town centre traffic to a total standstill.

They warmed up with a practice run at Tuckton/Iford which was a success with delays of up to two hours being achieved around Castle Lane and with the benefit of that experience have now moved on to the town centre.

Gridlock is the only way to describe traffic yesterday morning. It took me nearly one hour to drive from West Cliff Road to Meyrick Park with every route at a standstill. I have not performed so many three point turns in years.

In the last fortnight I have taken over one hour to drive from Penn Hill to Holdenhurst Road at the evening rush hour (should be renamed crawl hour) and attempting to use public transport waited at Bournemouth station for a particular bus to arrive which failed to turn up when at least 40 minutes late.

This is getting beyond a joke. The council have started numerous roadworks all at the same time (Pier Approach-Braidley Road-Westbourne) to name but three and these have caused the chaos that now exists even at off-peak times. If Bournemouth can manage this on their own, imagine what a combined authority of Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch can achieve.

A BURDEN
