I HAVE been involved with Wessex Diving Club since the 1980s, as a diver and then for over 20 years as a coach and committee member.

We are extremely disappointed that Poole council has agreed on proposals for the redevelopment of a leisure facility that does not include diving or opportunities for other deep water sports.

The club has been based at the Everyone Active Leisure Centre (formerly the Dolphin Swimming Pool) since 1976.

We are extremely proud that as a small voluntary club we have been able to provide opportunities for thousands of children and adults to learn this exciting sport.

The club prides itself on being affordable and accessible to all ages and abilities thus encouraging young people into a sport in line with the national agenda to increase activity and reduce obesity.

Not only is it a great physical activity, diving helps develop confidence and self-esteem.

It is a great sport for those wanting to do something as an individual, but within a supportive club environment.

Over the years we have had children with Asperger's, those on the autistic spectrum, Down's Syndrome, dyspraxia, children who have struggled at school and diving has helped them grow socially and emotionally.

Many of our divers have also gone on to be coaches. We also have lots of parents that have remained involved with the club despite their children no longer diving and many divers that have brought their own children to follow in their footsteps.

The club has a great family feel and we are all devastated at the thought of no longer being able to be involved in the sport.

We have also had divers that have gone on to national and international success.

Interest in the sport continues to grow with the success at recent Olympics and just this last week English divers achieved huge success at the Commonwealth Games.

The council only consulted on Option 2 which was for a 25m pool and learner pool and the survey gave no specific mention of diving.

We hope to campaign and get this decision reviewed.
