HAVING recently discovered that Dorset has its own immigration Removal Centre on Portland (the Verne), I was profoundly shocked by the recent BBC Panorama programme about the conditions people face in British Immigration Removal Centres.
After watching the programme, I have read that the allegations into staff behaviour in the documentary are being investigated, but hope that scrutiny will extend to the government policies that breed such conditions.
One of the issues covered was the uncertainty created by indefinite detention. The UK is the only country in Europe to detain people without a time limit.
As a member of a Quaker Meeting committed to building a culture of sanctuary in Britain.
We believe politicians should immediately introduce a 28 day limit, and work towards a system which respects the fundamental equality of every person.
I hope that our Dorset MPs watched the programme and take up the cause.
