IN August 1997, there appeared in Readers' Letters (Now Have Your Say) a letter of mine which paid tribute to Elvis Presley on the 20th anniversary of his death.
I promised to write another letter about Elvis in 2017, so here it is.
Elvis tragically died 40 years ago, on August 16, 1977, at the age of 42 and, in my opinion, remains unchallenged as the King of Rock 'n' Roll.
I particularly remember Elvis in the 1950s before he joined the army. The records he made in those days were, I believe, the most exciting he ever produced.
The first Elvis record I bought was a 78rpm recording of 'One Night' with 'Hard Headed Woman' on the B-side.
'One Night' is my favourite Elvis recording, but 'Baby Let's Play House' runs it a close second.
When I first heard the opening bars of 'Heartbreak Hotel', the hairs on the top of my head stood on end.
Sixty years later, listening to 'Heartbreak Hotel' still makes my hair stand on end - well, it would if I had any!
My devotion to Elvis is absolute and I will compose another letter about The King and send it to Have Your Say in 2037 - that's a promise!
