THE computer generated image of the proposed junction on the A338 along with the road through Wessex Fields - 'Works clash could cause traffic chaos', July 28th - does not, unfortunately, present the whole picture.

There are no offices shown on the field, the Retired National Nurses' Home is conveniently out-of-shot and the roads appear traffic free. But that is hardly surprising when the picture's caption describes the new flyover as a 'phase two footbridge'.

What exists at the moment is a footbridge crossing. Under the council's full phase one & two proposals that will disappear and pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders will have to share a new bridge with motorised traffic - something the footbridge was created to avoid.

As for Councillor Mike Greene's comment that the project would fix the 'congested, inadequate' roads at the eastern end of the town, by the council's own figures the offices, if built, would bring an additional c1,200 cars to the area in the morning rush hour, many of which would probably come from the Christchurch Road-Iford direction: a very odd idea of solving the traffic problems on Castle Lane East. And as for the extra traffic that would also be generated on Castle Lane West, the council's traffic figures have nothing to say.
