OUR busy promenades have become a major problem, leaving all the powers that be with a huge dilemma, to find solutions to satisfy all users.

I refer to the Echo, May 20. When I look at this familiar picture of two cyclists, boldly making their way through a crowded promenade of people, several words come to mind. Dangerous, irresponsible, rude, disrespectful, ignorant, uncaring.

Why not dismount? Why do they think they have a right to “weave” through these people?

All cycles should have audible warning, a bell, cycle insurance and identification plate.

Currently they use our roads and public places anonymously. Although a bike has no engine it is still a vehicle capable of causing serious injury.

With the above in place, I am sure cyclists would adopt a more responsible attitude which would protect themselves and others.

The council recognises there is a problem hence restrictions in the two summer months.

The definition of “promenade” is a “leisurely walk in a public place, along a seafront”.

We have gradually allowed our seafront to change. There are too many things we all have to consider now.

It has been allowed to get out of hand by trying to please everyone and without restrictions and a constant increase in bike users and dogs. It can only get only worse.

Marshalls are gone at 5pm, and 6pm in summer, so we are on our own.

The current situation does not give us much comfort.
