I WISH Mrs Scott a speedy recovery (Echo, May 17) from her collision with a cyclist on the seafront.

The subject of cycling on the promenade has been “discussed” in the Echo many times before, along with dogs.

I understand the promenade rules are difficult to enforce, the rangers can’t be everywhere and many (not all) cyclists are unaware or ignore the rules.

These are: ‘Cyclists Must Give Way To Pedestrians – They have The Right Of Way’, a speed limit of 10mph and ‘No Cycling’ (ever) on the zig zags, a rule regularly broken at Fisherman’s Walk.

During July and August no cycling is allowed on promenade (10am-6pm) although this year could be more difficult as the air show runs into September for three days.

Regarding dogs, they should be kept on a lead from May to September on the promenade. Not everyone is a dog lover and wants them making a tour of the inside of their beach hut. I have to say many owners do use a lead but a greater number don’t.

I don’t support banning cycling but I believe there needs to be more overt and positive action by seafront staff. They could ensure staggered barriers at suitable points (e.g. top and bottom of a zig zag, outside a beach office) to force cyclists to slow down.

This has been done before but there is no consistency. The use of A-boards could be considered to repeat the rules. Any reader with other ideas should contact the Seafront Office.

We all want to enjoy the benefits of having lovely beaches and the promenade so just a little more consideration by all the users would be great – come on, cyclists and dog owners, let’s work together to enjoy the summer to come.
